Brett grew up on the Atlantic Coast in Virginia and attended Christopher Newport University, where he was a member of Sigma Tau Gamma fraternity, serving as chapter president. He later attended Case Western Reserve University School of Law in Cleveland, Ohio, graduating in 2008. During law school he participated in study abroad programs in both The Netherlands and France, and as a third-year law student he represented indigent defendants in criminal trials under the supervision of a clinical professor.

Since graduating law school, he has practiced criminal law (both as prosecution and defense), immigration law, family law, and general litigation. As an immigration lawyer, Brett represented immigrants in a variety of matters, such as refugees seeking to adjust status, citizens and permanent residents seeking to sponsor family members oversees, and undocumented immigrants seeking asylum, deferred action, special immigrant juvenile status, withholding of removal, and various other categories of lawful relief. Brett left immigration law to spend more time in the courtroom, and now his practice focuses primarily on family law and litigation.

Brett also has an undergraduate degree in exercise science, and enjoys volunteering with Special Olympics. His hobbies include weightlifting, trail running, world traveling, and hopelessly cheering for the Cleveland Browns.
